Welcome

Escape to a hidden orchard within the Brockley Conservation Area, where three shepherd's huts sit among fruit trees, raised beds and a wildflower meadow. We offer three private shepherd's huts for two, each with its own en-suite and kitchen, and a shared garden that doubles as an outdoor classroom for a local primary school in term time. There's no spa or restaurant here — just a quiet green corner of London, a short walk from Brockley station, and everything you need for a proper slow weekend.

Each shepherd's hut sleeps two, with a clever fold-away bed, its own en-suite and a private garden. Same orchard, three quiet corners.

The Orchard Garden

The garden is as much a part of your stay as the shepherd's hut itself. Raised beds of fruit and vegetables, a wildflower meadow left to grow, a pond, and two bug hotels — all part of an ongoing effort to make this corner of Brockley genuinely good for wildlife, not just good to look at. Wander the paths, sit out with a coffee, or simply let the orchard do the rest.

Our Story

The land beneath Wickham Orchard has been growing things for centuries. This was once Joseph Myatt's Manor Farm, home to the British Queen strawberry and the rhubarb that spread across Victorian London — the reason there's an orchard here at all, and the reason we've planted one again.

The stay

Meet our shepherd's huts.

Two guests, and endless ways to configure the space. Here is what every shepherd's hut gives you.

Sleeping

All our shepherd's huts sleep a maximum of two guests. The bed folds neatly into the wall, giving you complete flexibility of space. Fancy a day lazing in and out of bed? You decide how to configure the space and how you relax.

Gathering

Once the bed is folded away, bench seating and a hold-down table transform the space for dining and gathering. A full cafetiere to start the day, a midday refuel after a morning exploring, or a romantic meal and an always competitive game of cards: the shepherd's hut shapes itself around your stay.

En-suite

Every shepherd's hut has a beautifully designed en-suite, fitted with an electric shower, a heated towel rail and a marble wash basin, for freshening up before or after exploring the city.

Private garden

The natural orchard setting is what makes the retreat. Each stay has its own outdoor dining table and parasol, for rain or shine. Enjoy a morning coffee to birdsong, or a cold beer as the sky turns golden.

Cooking up a storm

Fully equipped with a two-ring induction hob, a small electric oven, a fridge, a kettle and a Belfast sink: everything you need for a romantic meal cosied up inside. Short of an ingredient? Pick your own salad or herbs from the vegetable garden.

Wellness

The shepherd's huts sit within a secret, enchanting wild nature park, designed to enhance wildlife and biodiversity. Roam beyond your garden to find places to reflect, gather, relax and play, with cards, chess and games inside for rainy afternoons.

Community & Roots

Our Roots

Our vision was simple: create a retreat that gives back.

It sounds straightforward, right? But Wickham Orchard is the first of a new concept of how space can be used: a simultaneously private and public space. We at Wickham Orchard feel that the idea of closed door projects is dated. Sustainable projects should be open to all and give back to their local area.

Monday to Wednesday

An outdoor classroom

Monday to Wednesday the orchard is used solely as a Forest School by The Myatt Garden Primary School, bringing access to nature and learning to local children.

Thursday to Sunday & holidays

A nature retreat

Thursday to Sunday, along with school holidays, the park is used as a nature retreat: a stay rooted in nature, hidden in the city.

Forest school

Learning that grows with the seasons.

Working with Myatt Garden Primary, the orchard becomes a living education space where children learn through the seasons: sowing, tending, harvesting and watching the ground change through the year.

The concept

Three pillars, one piece of land.

A new and sustainable land use concept, bringing together environmental, social and economic pillars to invest in enhancing wildlife and biodiversity, while giving back to the local community and generating income that is reinvested in maintaining the environment and its use to the local community.

01

Environmental

Every decision is made to enhance wildlife and biodiversity across the orchard, from the planting to the way the ground is cared for.

02

Social

The space gives back to the local community and its children, opening up access to nature and learning right on their doorstep.

03

Economic

Income from the retreat is reinvested into maintaining the orchard and keeping it useful to the community for years to come.

Throughout the year

Our story

Grown from a market garden.

Wickham Orchard sits on land that has been growing things for a very long time. The name is a nod to the market gardens that once fed London from right here in Brockley.

Long before the terraces arrived, Brockley Green was a farming settlement on the edge of the Great North Wood, the old woodland that once stretched all the way from Deptford through to Streatham and Selhurst. Its managed landscape gave London timber, charcoal, firewood and oak bark, and its fields fed the growing city.

Well into the nineteenth century this corner of South London stayed green: a patchwork of farms, nurseries, orchards and market gardens. One of them was Manor Farm, set between what are now Breakspears Road and Wickham Way, and run by a gardener named Joseph Myatt.

Portrait of Joseph Myatt holding a basket of strawberries
Joseph Myatt of Manor Farm, whose strawberries and rhubarb made Brockley famous.
Nineteenth century map showing Wickham Road and the market gardens
Wickham Road and the market gardens, drawn when this was all still open ground.

Myatt was a grower of real note. He cultivated new varieties of strawberry, among them the British Queen, once described as the most famous strawberry ever raised in England, and held annual Strawberry Feasts at the farm. He is also the reason Londoners took to rhubarb: his work made it popular, and before long the city was ringed with rhubarb fields, cheerfully fertilised with night soil carried out from town.

The most famous strawberry ever raised in England, grown a few streets from here.

The gardens were built over in the later nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, and the farms gave way to the streets we know now. But the ground remembers. When we planted the orchard, we planted it in that spirit: fruit trees, a rewilded garden and three small shepherd's huts, a quiet continuation of a very old Brockley habit of growing good things and sharing them.

That is why we are Wickham Orchard, and why there is fruit on our door.

Before you arrive

Good to know.

When can I check in and out?+
Check-in is from 4pm by keypad, and check-out is by 10am. We send your door code the day before, so you can let yourself in whenever you arrive. There is no need to strip beds or wash up when you leave. Early check-in and late check-out are available on request for a small fee when the calendar allows.
How does getting in work?+
Each shepherd's hut has its own keypad lock and its own name sign (Apple, Plum or Pear). Enter the unique code we send you and turn the handle. If it does not work, check you are at the right shepherd's hut and try again slowly, as the keypad can be sensitive to a rushed entry. We are always at the end of the phone if you get stuck.
Why are some weeknights unavailable?+
During Lewisham school term time we are not permitted to take stays on Monday, Tuesday or Wednesday nights. It is a planning condition tied to being a quiet residential orchard, and we take it seriously. Those nights are open during school holidays, and weekends are available all year round.
What is in the shepherd's hut?+
A proper double bed, a wall thermostat for the heating, and a kitchenette with a two-ring induction hob, a small oven, a fridge, a kettle and everything you need to cook simply. Hot water and wifi throughout. The induction hob needs pans with a flat magnetic base, which is usually why a pan will not heat if it does not.
Are there any house rules?+
A gentle few, so the orchard stays lovely for everyone. No smoking inside the shepherd's huts, quiet hours from 10pm to 8am, and no parties or events. We are not able to welcome pets. Maximum occupancy is two per shepherd's hut, and we ask guests to keep to the marked paths, as this is a working orchard. The full details are in the Welcome Book in your shepherd's hut.
Is there parking?+
The orchard is on a residential street, so we encourage guests to come by train. Brockley station is a short walk and connects you to London Bridge in about fifteen minutes. If you do need to drive, get in touch and we will talk you through the local options.
What about the security deposit?+
We place a refundable £200 hold on your card shortly before arrival. Nothing is actually taken as long as the shepherd's hut is left as you found it, and the hold is released within 48 hours of check-out.
Is Wickham Orchard suitable for children?+
Each shepherd's hut is designed for two adults, so it is best suited to couples or friends travelling together rather than families with young children. The orchard itself is a working, rewilded space rather than a fenced garden, which is worth bearing in mind if you are travelling with little ones.
